| 15th August is celebrated as the Independence Day in India and is observed as a national holiday throughout the country. 15th August is a day of national importance and marks the freedom of the country from the 200 year colonial rule. Every year on the 15th August, numerous festivities are celebrated to mark the occasion and the preparations for the celebrations begin days in advance. It was on 15th August 1947 that India became a sovereign republic and every year on this day memories of the struggle, the sacrifices, the atrocities and finally the triumph, all come flashing back to the memory of every Indian.

There are several festivities that are associated with the celebrations of 15th August. Some of the most significant ones have been mentioned below for your perusal:
Flag Hoisting The tri colour Indian National Flag is hoisted in every government office and in the state centres. Politicians, senior leaders and ministers do the honours of hoisting the national flag and the national anthem is sung with great devotion.
Other than the government offices, private organizations also follow the traditions of hoisting the national flag, especially on this day. The entire country seems drenched in the spirit of national integrity and the ambiance is that of great merriment.

Celebrations in Schools and Colleges Almost all schools, colleges and other institutions in the country have some or the other event lined up for the occasion. Other than flag hoisting, numerous other cultural programs, debates and elocutions and even games and sports are held keeping in mind the theme and the national spirit.
Kite Flying Although not a prescribed feature, kite flying has nevertheless become an inseparable part of the celebrations of 15th August. Kites of distinct shapes and sizes, kites with messages of national unity and even kites resembling the various significant elements of the country are flown every where. This has become more than a tradition and the young as well as the old members of the family, all come together to take part in it.
Thus 15th August is more than just the day marking the Independence Day in India. It is a day on which every Indian takes pride in and even people from far and wide come to feast on the lavish celebrations of the day.
