Hola Mohalla

Holla Mohalla is a Sikh festival that is celebrated throughout Punjab. It is celebrated one day after the celebrations of Holi, the festival of colours. Although the two festivals coincide in terms of the time they are celebrated, the similarity ends here.
While Holi is purely a festival of colours where people play with gulal and various other natural and artificial colours, Hola Mohalla on the other hand is celebrated to demonstrate the martial skills of the Sikh warriors. Mock battles are organized throughout the state and people from various corners of the country come to take part in this colourful presentation and be a witness to it.

To capture the true essence of the festival, a trip to Anandpur Sahib in Punjab becomes a must. It is here that in 1701 the last Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Govind Singhji originated the festival, that has since then been celebrated every year. Hola Mohalla has been awarded the status of being a National Festival and thus enjoys the participation of national and international guests every year.
Hola Mohalla is a blend of artistic and warfare talents that are displayed at its height throughout the 3 day long festival. Poetry competitions, music and dance performance besides the traditional kirtans… all play a significant role in completing the celebrations of Hola Mohalla. The Hola Mohalla parade also includes skills displayed in the following genres: Horsemanship, tent pegging, use of arms and also a colourful procession of the Nihangs.
